Universe of Puyo Puyo

From Puyo Nexus Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The universe of Puyo Puyo spans multiple worlds and dimensions, described by Marle as each operating on their own unique sets of rules. These worlds are usually isolated from each other, but can connect and be traveled between by supernatural means, such as warping caused by popping Puyos. Most characters originate from one particular world, but others, such as Ecolo, exist within the space between these worlds.

Worlds

World of Sorcery

The World of Sorcery as seen in Super Nazo Puyo Tsu: Rulue no Tetsuwan Hanjouki .

The World of Sorcery is the main setting of the Madou Monogatari series, as well as the Puyo Puyo series up to Minna de Puyo Puyo. Most characters created by Compile come from this world, and its chronology extends, both fictionally and development-wise, before Madou Monogatari with Madoushi Lulba, and after Compile's run of the franchise with Pochi and Nyaa. Although characters from other Compile franchises, such as JUMP HERO, make appearances, they do not appear to officially share this world. In Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop, it is described as having this name for being filled with swords and magic.

Gaiearth

The Grand Sealing Tower in Gaiearth, as seen in Madou Monogatari (Saturn).

Gaiearth is the homeworld of Ragnus the Brave seen in Madou Monogatari (Saturn) and Shin Madou Monogatari, as well as the future setting of Puyo Puyo Gaiden: Puyo Wars within the context of the Madou Monogatari Chronology. Due to only appearing in works written by Kenji Oda, it is not explicitly confirmed whether or not it remains' the home of Ragnus in the current canon, but his continued presence in the series and new origin story for Puyos suggest that the events of Puyo Wars are not canon.

Primp

Primp Town, as it appears in Puyo Puyo Fever 2.

Primp is the main setting of the Puyo Puyo series beginning with Puyo Puyo Fever. It is colloquially named after it's most commonly seen location, Primp Town, and the surrounding area of Primp.

It is the homeworld of the characters introduced in Puyo Puyo Fever and Puyo Puyo Fever 2, most of which live in Primp Town. Other characters such as Lemres and Feli come from an unseen neighboring town, despite often being seen visiting Primp. It is also the current home of many major characters from the World of Sorcery, after being warped there during the events of games such as Puyo Puyo Fever and Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary. Additionally, it is the world Puyos originate from in the franchise's current canon.

Development-wise, this world was created to appeal to a new generation of players, as many fans of the Compile era were growing older by this time.

Puyo Puyo 7 world

Main article: Suzuran

Puyo Puyo 7 introduced a new world as its main setting, which also appears in games such as Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. The world is similar to the Earth in real life. Its main setting is the fictional Japanese town Suzuran, the hometown of Puyo Puyo 7's ARS trio: Ringo Ando, Risukuma, and Maguro Sasaki.

Being based on the real word, magic generally does not exist in it. However, there are instances of magic-users and supernatural occurrences in this world. Despite being from Earth, the ARS trio came to possess magic abilities after being exposed to a mysterious light during the opening of Puyo Puyo 7. Various supernatural, extraterrestrial or mythical creatures are also known to exist, such as the Loch Ness Monster and Tsuchinoko.

Pwurp Island

Pwurp Island is the setting of Puyo Puyo!! Quest. It is connected to many other worlds, including those within the franchise, other franchises, and the worlds of characters created for Quest.

Puyo Puyo Tetris world

The characters introduced in Puyo Puyo Tetris, such as the S.S. Tetra crew and Ex, originate from a world within a separate dimension from the rest of the franchise. Although it is never visited within the games' stories, in-game backgrounds depict it as a futuristic sci-fi world with many square elements. Tetriminos and the game of Tetris come from this world, and stay within it outside the events of Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.

Book World

Puyo Puyo Chronicle is set in the Book World, a realm within a book found at the Precise Museum in Primp Town, though it is also able to be visited by Marle in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. It is a fantasy world evocative of the World of Sorcery, notably taking cues from Arle no Bouken: Mahou no Jewel. It is the homeworld of Ally and Rafisol, though most of its residents are shown to be anthropomorphic canines. The world is divided into 5 regions, each associated with one of the main Puyo colors, called Grimp, Bleuo, Retty, Yellome and Purplune.

Intral City

Intral City is the homeworld of the protagonists introduced in the story mode of Puyo Puyo!! Quest: Atari, Roquier, Seo, and Puubot of the Spacetime Detective Agency.

Other spaces

Within the cosmology of the franchise, other spaces not bound to a specific world have been shown to exist, visited mainly in the Puyo Puyo Tetris games.

Constellation Zone

The Constellation Zone is visited in Puyo Puyo Tetris and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.

Edge of Spacetime

The Edge of Spacetime is where Ex resides as Keeper of Dimensions, and the final destination reached by the protagonists in Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Edge of Two Worlds

The Edge of Two Worlds is a space which exists on the farthest reaches of the universe, where worlds of both the Puyo Puyo and Tetris dimensions are overseen by Marle and Squares. It is visited in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2.

Dream World

The Dream World is the main setting of Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop. During the events of the game, it contains replicas of familiar locations from Primp and Suzuran, likely due to the presence of characters from said worlds. Meena is the world's guide.
